GitHub Satellite 2019
Yesterday I had a chance to attempt in Github Satellite Event in Kraftwerk, in Berlin.
The event focused on about communities and how collaborations can turns ideas to the innovations.
There are a lot of companies and solution partners to introduce their products and tools to answer and help to build to the attendees to clear their concerns and solve them.
All topics was around open source programming, such as power of community , security concerns and solutions.
And they launched Github Sponsor Beta product. They add a new beta feature to make some donation to the developers who need some sponsorship. You can make donation till 5000 $.
As they said that this is to support to enlarge the open source community.
I could join 5 sessions, but I will mention three of them.
First session was Software security, trust, and public policy
This was a kind of panel, Director of the Policy department of Github was moderate , and his guest was Marietje Schaake, Member of the European Parliament.
They mention that power of the internet good and bad ways. They talked about the works to protect people agains to the cyber security crimes by law. Marietje is working on to create a bridge between tech experts and governments who law makers. She said that even private companies starts to create their security norms like Facebook , governments needs to start to create their norms to protect Democracy as she said.
And she mention on Copy Rights, she said there is not a good history about the copy rights crimes and she mentioned that there needs to be some law to protect the creators rights. She said that there is still a lot of discussions about Cyber security issues, and have different aspect about the ownership of the data.
Second was a panel also, Open source security: who’s responsible?
There are some engineering VPs and directors who is the lead of the openSource teams in their company.
According to the survey which Snyk did,
%70 of open source software developers don’t believe, they don’t code in a safe way.
When moderator ask the question how do they decide to open your source code .The main point was that which they come together , they start to open their code to motivate their employees and motivated people stay to create a community on that. They said they believe the power of the community.
They mention that creating a great community keeps your team inspired and dynamic.
They said that more that security concern , because when you open your code you receive a lot of comments about your vulnerabilities, that makes your code more stable and trustable.
And the last one , In the Shadow of the Black Hole was the most amazing session .
The session speakers were the team who develop the open source software to capture the image of the magic black hole which is in galaxy M87. The Event Horizontal Telescope team spoke about their study step by step , how they collect the informations how they maintained and which software they developed and used to get this informations and they talked about how they improve the theorems of the black holes.
They explained why they made open source and what was the benefits of it.
And this was a great example about the power of worldwide collaboration .
End of the session everybody just stand up and start to clap the scientist , this was amazing.
My impressions
That was great to listen and meet the people who is the behind of the code. I had a change to talk with them face to face and listen their stories.
